SOS Méditerranée meets the skippers

It was a special moment on Saturday morning during the skippers' and co-skippers' briefing, when Jocelyne, a volunteer with the Hérault-Gard branch of SOS Méditerranée, came to present the work of this European civil association for human rescue at sea. In front of an audience that was more focused on the technical aspects of the race, between the weather report and the presentation of the MED MAX - Occitanie-Saïdia Resorts starting system, she listed the impressive figures for the number of migrants rescued from Mediterranean waters, and the chilling figures for those who were not so lucky.  "The Mediterranean is the world's deadliest migratory route".she stressed, pointing to photos of empty makeshift boats on the giant screen. Her introduction prompted questions from the sailors about what to do if they came across a boat full of migrants. " The sailing area covered by the MedMax is not the most used, but it is becoming increasingly so, she warned, emphasising the need to navigate at night, as these boats have no lights whatsoever.   "If you come across a migrant boat, the most important thing is to report your position immediately. Then, depending on the degree of distress, it's up to each individual to make the decision. As for boats left empty, we have no legal right to recover them. In any case, we're here to save lives, not boats. "she concludes, smiling as she apologises for having dampened the mood a little.
