A dream day in Port-Camargue

"Draw me a sheep". Remember the Little Prince’s repeated request to the pilot Saint-Exupéry?. On Thursday 26th , in Port-Camargue, over 250 fourth-grader had the chance to ask Kito de Pavant to draw them a… boat! Their visit was overseen by the famous skipper turned designer of the MED MAX I Occitanie - Saïdia Resorts race himself, personally invested in this operation, with the approuval of education inspector Éric Ciabini and the help of educational adviser Aude Eberlé-Soulages. Altogether ten schools from Grau-du-Roi, Aigues-Mortes, Saint-Laurent d'Aigouze, Les Terres de Camargue Community, and another from Frontignan, joyfully invaded the village for a unforgettable day.

To start with they were showed a video entitled "Ocean racing for dummies" and then allowed to shoot Kito all the questions on their mind about this line of work or his own career. The 8-9 years old, keen on adventure, were particularly moved when the skipper told them about his encounter with a sperm whale, far away in the Deep South! Whether the skipper feared falling over board or hurting an animal are questions that often came. The kids took them to the other skippers when they were allowed to scatter on the docks to discover their "racing beasts". Each class having drawn an envelope had been assigned the name of a skipper, set off to search him or her in a real treasure hunt. The sailors all played along and left the children in amazement!

Mikael Mergui caused a sensation when he told them how dolphins play around his boat, and how he had to watch out not to hurt them. Or what it felt like to jump on the deck of his boat. The remark made the skipper of Centrakor laugh as he’s 6 feet 3 !

Next to him, Edgard Vincens admitted that sailing was a great sport, but not affordable by everyone. It did put some kids off, but not all, many still pictured themselves crossing the oceans on such magnificent boats. Then an autograph run began along the quayside with a selfie contest nearly on the trampoline of Upwind by MerConcept, Anne-Claire Le Berre and Elodie-Jane Mettraux’s Ocean Fifty. They’re the sole female crew onboard one of these impressive multihulls. The call of the sea might have echoed in some of the young girls present ?

In the afternoon, after the picnic, the spectacle of the prologue of the nine Ocean Fifty, compared to "immense spiders" illuminating the bay of Aigues-Mortes with their coloured sails, added a touch of magic to these sunny moments. Like the looks on the faces of these "little princes" of the sea and, no doubt, their dreams of the night.
