The Oriental Region covers an area of around 90,130 km2 and has a population of 2,314,346, according to the 2014 General Census of Population and Housing, representing 6.8% of the Kingdom's total population.

As a result, the region's population density reached around 26 inhabitants per km2 in 2014, compared with 48 at national level. It is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the west by the provinces of Al Hoceima, Taza and Boulmane, to the east and south-east by Algeria and to the south-west by the province of Errachidia. It is characterised by the diversity of its relief, with a 200 km long coastline, plains, rivers, mountains, high plateaux and desert.

The region is a gateway to Africa, a focal point in the Maghreb and a Mediterranean interface with Europe. Over the years, it has become a melting pot of civilisations, cultures and traditions. It possesses major economic assets that will enable integrated and comprehensive regional development.

The Oriental Region comprises a prefecture and seven provinces. It comprises 124 local authorities, 28 of which are urban.
